Introduction of the tea tree and tea leaves
The tea trees in Fengqing belongs to Fengqing Large-leaf vaviety, a kind of Sexual variety, Arbor, quite large. Original in Fengqing, tea tress very big, some even up to 6 meters high, the leaves 12.6 to 20.5 cm length, width 5.2 to 8.1 cm. In 1984 China identified the Fengqing Large-leaf as national improved variety, named “Hua Cha No. 13 (GsCTl3)”. It contains high content of the tea polyphenols and catechin. Usually the spring one bud and two leaves contains amino acid 2.9%, polyphenols 30.2%, caffeine 3.2% and catechin 13.4%.
The tea leaves used to make this Gold Buds Puerh cake tea 2005 are picked from 30 to 40 years old Large-leaf Arbor Tea Trees. The trees are naturally growth without any fertilizer and pesticides, only need manually loosen the oil and trim branches and leaves. To compare with our Tribute Pu-erh Cake Tea 2007, this golden buds puerh cake contains more tender buds to ensure its better and deeper mellow taste.
Characteristics of this piece of Puerh tea cake:
Introduction of the tea farmer
The founder of Yunnan Sanning Tea Factory Mr Zhou Zhirong, who is an authentic Yunnan people, has been in tea business for more than 20 years. He established Sanning tea in 1998 which was authorized famous brand by Yunnan province. We deeply felt his insist of traditional tea process by communicating with him. He said: “Most of my time is spent on tea mountain. I think the most important is the essential quality inside the tea.” “There’s the best tea trees and best environment in Fengqing. What we need to do is to bring the natural of tea to all the tea lovers”.

The big tea trees in Mr Zhou’s mountain, they are over 60 years old
The most important things decide the Puerh quality:
1 Place: The high quality Puerh should use the Yunan Large-leaf variety. The main traditional Puerh production areas are Xishuangbanna, Pu’er (Simao), Lincang and Baoshan. The tea from different area has different characteristic. And each place also has their own representative places, for example, the representative places in Lingcang are: Fengqing and Mengku.
2 The quality of tea tress: Although all the Puerh tea trees are Yunnan Large-leaf tea trees variety, this variety also has many subcategories. There are many ways to distinguish the tea trees. In order to understand easily, we can judge the quality by the age of the trees. The older the tea tree is, the deeper the root is, so it can absorb more nutrient and mineral substance which can ensure the high quality of the tea. Generally speaking, the 60 years old tea tree (also called big tea tree 大树茶) is better than the 30 years old tea tree (also called arbor tea tree 乔木茶) which is better than 10 years old or less than 10 years old tea tree (also called tableland tea tree 台地茶). Of course, there are also some tea trees more than hundred years old which is quite rare.
3 Picking time: For big tea tree, the Spring tea and Autumn tea both have their own characteristic which are better than Summer tea. For tableland tea tree, the Spring tea is the best, then Autumn tea, Summer tea is the worst
4 The grade of tea leaves: The thick branches and big leaves don’t mean it is bad quality. Usually the grade only means the tenderness of the maocha. It can be divided into ten grades by the tenderness. The super grade is the most tender which contains tiny buds with golden tips. The worst is the tenth grade which contains big leaves with stalk. The appearance of higher grade maocha is elegant and the also contains more inclusions. But the higher grade also has bitter taste. The lower grade taste roughly and clearly, and also contains much fragrant which make the tea rich taste. So it is better to choose puerh by the taste you like but not only focus on the grade.
5 Storage time: Under the condition of dry storage, the taste changes with the length of time it stored; the longer it stored, the better it tastes. With fine Pu-erh tea, the longer it is stored and aged, as long as it is stored properly, the more complex the flavor and the more valuable the tea gets. But it need to note that it is under the condition of good place, tea tree and proper picking time, it can’t be only emphasis the storage time but ignore the tea inner quality.
Besides the above factors, there are also some other aspects which can affect the puerh quality like the tea process.

I received this as one of the samples on my last order. This was my first experience with Pu'er, and I brewed the entire 10 gram sample in a small gaiwan. I was very impressed with this tea, it had a sweet taste and only got stronger with each steeping.

This is comparable to some of the higher quality ripened puerh I have had the honor to enjoy.
It has a clean taste and a noticeable clearing quality. In other words, it is absolutely refreshing without any undesirable caffeine side-effects.
The leaves are quite large, and allow for many steepings (4-8), each with an enjoyable result.
I found the flavor to be short-lived compared so similar teas and higher grade puerh I have tried.
For the price, this is a very very good puerh and will likely improve with age.
I will buy again.

First steep – This has dark amber coloured liquid that smells mildly of dry leaves. The flavour is slightly sweet and earthy and refreshing all at the same time. The tea at the bottom of my tea bowls is stronger and is much earthier with a touch of astringency.
Second steep – Same dark amber liquid with a more predominant fragrance of flowers. The flavour is also now somewhat floral but still gentle and refreshing. Its also a little woody now also.
Third steep – The liquid is now very dark and reminds me of soy sauce but with a red glow. It’s also much earthier and woodier now but still with that gentle floral touch. Smell wise it reminds me of damp earth or fish but not strong. (I buy cat treats that smell similar).
Fourth steep – The compacted cake pieces have now broken up to resemble dark brown loose leaves. Still getting stronger and stronger with both fragrance and flavour with the most notable being the earthiness. Very nice and full bodied pu erh so far and it keeps improving.
Fifth steep – The red glow has darkened now so the soy sauce appeal is even stronger. Rather astringent and strong, a little smoky but still very earthy. The smell is still reminding me of cat treats.
Sixth steep – Again stronger than the previous steep and earthy…it resembles cocoa, not chocolate but more nib. It’s dark and smoky and earthy and slightly sweet and astringent. Beautifully pu erh.

I don't drink pu-erh often, but I have tried quite a few different kinds. This is the highest quality I have tried. I rinsed the 10g pack and then steeped with 600ml of water for 20 sec. I'm enjoying the second steep (45 sec) now. I'm sure I'll be able to get a few more steeps still. You need to be careful with pu-erh though- it is good for weight loss (strips the fat off your inner organs) however it will leave you hungry (and thirsty). This aside, the tea is very enjoyable!

Another great Pu-erh from Tea Vivre. I got it as part of the Pu-erh sample assortment. I rinsed 5 gm briefly with boiling water twice and then used 8 oz boiling water for each steeping, starting with 30 seconds the 1st few times, increasing to 1, 1 1/2, 2 etc. By the 8th or 9th, I was up to 3 min. Still had plenty of flavor for me- nice and earthy, and especially good with a little stevia. I also enjoyed it at room temp and cold!

Very very nice puerh. Actually i did like that puerh the most (from TeaVivre variety).
Dark. Mid-strong. Mid-taste.
The main note in the taste: Well... pretty calssic one for puerh. i`d say its some smoky-tobaco one.
The "sample" which we use lasts for almost 14 brewings in a row.
The only thing which could be better: Well, if that tea were only a little bit more "stronger".
Anyway.... 5 star!

Wet Leaf: The aroma was a warm earthy smell again there was that almost tobacco leaf aroma.
Liquor: Had a dark reddish color
Taste: This tea had a smooth mellow earthy almost tobacco leaf taste the life of the tea.
Q: The feedback to the tea people write about an earthy taste.
Could there be a taste of "voduy" (渥 堆) in Puer 2005?
He had already weathered.
Or this Puer poorly stored? Posted on 12/17/12 by Thorny
Reply: For all the Puerh there's more or less earthy taste. Wodui "voduy" , the pile-fermentation, refers to ferment tea leaves by piling them up.
Microbes which produced during the fermentation will cause chemical reaction, and then bring the special earthy into finished teas.
This Puerh is well storage.
