Shaking Fragrance

Dear tea lovers, have you heard of Shaking Fragrance?

Shaking Fragrance, a distinctive tea art performance in the tea ceremony, evokes rich cultural implications and refined ceremonial sensations. It allows the aroma of tea to be released faster, improving the quality of the subsequent tea brewing experience. Before brewing tea, after warming the tea set, a suitable number of dried tea leaves are placed in a Gaiwan or teapot, covered, and rapidly shaken to absorb the heat, a process known as fragrance shaking.

The Purpose of Shaking Fragrance:

Stimulating the aroma of tea leaves

After warming the Gaiwan or teapot, the dried tea leaves are placed into it and shaken several times. Under the steaming effect of the heat, the aroma of the dried tea leaves is fully stimulated. Smelling the tea aroma at this moment  provides a multi-layered experience, and skilled tea lovers can even judge the authenticity and quality of the tea based on the aroma.

Evenly Distributing Tea Leaves

Different-shaped tea leaves may be dispersed more equally in the teaware by shaking fragrance, which will guarantee a more consistent concentration of tea liquor during brewing.

The Methods of Shaking Fragrance: Here we introduce 2 common methods of shaking fragrance:

1.Shaking fragrance up and down

Suitable for intact strips and granular tea. Press down the lid with thumb. Tilt the Gaiwan. The other four fingers hold the bottom. The left hand holds the Gaiwan too. Hold the Gaiwan in front of your chest. Shake it up and down three times.

2.Shaking fragrance horizontally

Suitable for the broken tea leaves. It can prevent tea from sticking to the lid. Lift the Gaiwan with your index finger, thumb and middle finger. Shake it horizontally and gently three times.

Shaking fragrance not only improves the aroma of tea leaves, but it also adds creativity and enjoyment to the tea-brewing process.
